Pull the car to a halt and select Park. Turn off the car as normal.
Restart the car and very slowly change the gears one by one until you get to Drive but making sure you feel the car move into each gear you select on the way down. You may have noticed that the car was very sluggish on takeoff when the lights were flashing? The car was stuck in 3rd gear as there is an electrical fault to the transmission. This is usually due to water or something like that. This should work, its just the computer getting confused about which gear its in. If you do it slowly it should be fine.

I had this - took the casing off the gear shift (lifts off) and found a pencil stuck under there - took the pencil out and it stopped

On the Discovery II (most models) Automatic, if the M and S lights are flashing and the Gear selector on the dash refuses to display the gear indicator correctly and the Gear lever lights flash on and off.
Remove Ignition key.Place Friend in car to move auto Gearlever back and forth whilst you climb under to locate the selector unit. When found on side of gearbox mount lead light to see connector just above selector. unclip and slide connector off the holding bracket(Tight fit then bend the bracket up). Unmarry the connector. Spray Q20 or switch cleaner into the male and female ends. Stand the selector side of connector end upright to allow the liquid to run down into the selector. Leave for about 1 hour. Remarry. Carefully Drill a 1mm hole into the closest / lowest part of the selector housing / switch, into the black part. It is like a hard plastic. Untill you feel the drill bit move freely into the housing. Only drill about 4 to 5mm deep. Redrill bigger with a 2 mm bit. Slide the supplied Q20 nozzel hose attachment (thin tube) into the drilled hole. Spray copious amounts of Q20 (switch cleaner) into the selector housing whilst freind moves Gear Lever back and forth. Insert a 5 x 2.5 mm self tapper screw to drilled hole to seal it.
It took mine about 2 hours of driving and has been right (No more Lock up and flashing lights) ever since for some 3 months now.
The so called design engineer who suggested this device must stay away from Land Rover and needs his butt kicked. Think twice about taking your Disco 2 Auto into a river due to this part flooding. I hope he didnt have anything to do with any later models. PS spray all your ABS sensors too. (Below water level) follow the cables from the disks to locate them, another design flaw!

It is flashing a code for you to use in determining the reason the flashing purpose. in other words it has determined that there is a problem with the air bag system. it will flash the code for 5 times and the the light will stay on. it will be a 2 digit code. count the flashes to determine the code. Your Ford dealer can tell you what the codes mean and where to look for the problem.
If check engine is on while driving but not flashing the computer of the car is sending out a code you probably have an emission problem count the flashes this will give you a code. a short pause between the flashes is the second or third, forth, etc of the code. after a long pause it will either repeat the code or give u another.
A flashing check engine light indicates a "catalyst damaging" misfire. Do not drive while light is flashing. It can(or already has) cause damage to your catalytic converter which can be very expensive to replace. It is likely you have an ignition problem on one cylinder. Bad coil or wire or something like that. It is not uncommon for that to be an intermittent problem. Your check engine light only flashes when it detects the misfire is present at that time. The regular check engine light will remain on to remind you there is a problem that needs addressed.
The light is flashing because there is a problem. The problem will need to be diagnosed and repaired to stop the flashing.
When the overdrive off light flashes it means the powertrain control module has "received" information of a transmission problem. Take it in to the dealer or other transmission repair professional, continuing to drive with the O/D OFF light flashing can result in damage to the transmission.
The engine light flashes when the computer has detected a problem and set a code. The code can be read for free at most auto parts stores and they can tell you what may need to be replaced to fix it.
It means there is a problem with the charging system. Can be a loose drive belt, problem with the alternator, or loose wire.
the d4 flashes when the ecu has detected a problem you will have to get the codes pulled from the ecu to diagnose the problem or switch off the ignition leave for a few seconds then restart should go away. Make sure the car is fully stopped between changes from reverse to drive.
When the hold light is flashing, it means there is a problem with the transmission system. The problem can be various things including the transmission is locked in a gear and can be caused by overheating or a speed sensor problem.
The service engine soon light flashes when the computer senses a fault and sets a diagnostic code. Most auto parts stores will read this code for free and tell you what may be causing the problem.
there is a button on either your gear shifter or your turn signal that says hold. press and release and the light will go off. According to the 1991 Mazda MPV manual, the flashing indicates that there is an electrical problem with the transmission.
A flashing check engine light indicates that you have problem that will damage the catalytic converter. You should have the check engine light checked very quick/tomorrow,if not sooner. converters cost over $800.00.
