US Marines are called "Jarheads", "Leathernecks", and "DevilDogs", while US Army soldiers are commonly referred to as "Doggies", "Dogfaces," and "GI's." The term "DevilDog" or "Teufelhunden" was given to the Marines by the German survivors of WW1's vicious battle of Belleau Wood", where the Marines stopped the German advance only 70 miles short of Paris and then spearheaded the Allied advance into Germany.
They can also be called "jarheads," because their buzz-off haircuts are similar if not identical. You can call Army soldiers "GIs." GI is short for "Government Issue," and is often incorrectly thought to stand for "General Infantry."
You can also call members of both branches "grunts," and "boots." Boot is short for "boot camp," and this last nickname is not well received by either branch.
Marines have quite a few nicknames, including "Devil Dogs," given to them by the Germans of WWI, and "Leathernecks," due to their habit of always being out fighting in the hot areas of the world (WWII Pacific islands, the Middle East, etc.).
Navy seamen are nicknamed "Swabbies," for the classic ship-board activity of swabbing up the deck.
Air Force airmen are called "zoomies," due to the sounds of their airplanes.
The branches also have pejorative nicknames for each other: Armymen are "ground pounders."
Marines are "swamp runners."
Airmen are "the Post Office in Uniform."
Seamen are "squids," and quite a few other, very colorful names.
"Dogface" has been around a long time in reference to US Army personnel, but I would not recommend personally addressing them as such...
Disparaging terms include Doggy and Dog face.
Targets. Sky Jockies
Yes, but it is typically used for the Army. GI stands for government issue and was used as a general term for any member of the US military. Marines would prefer to be called Marines or Jarheads.
The Marines are Marines. The Army has Army Special Forces AKA Green Berets.
the nickname given to the US Marines is Jarhead
The Marines in World War 2 were called Jarheads, Devil Dogs, leathernecks. Germans were referred to as Jerrys and Huns.
