Hekla is Iceland's most active volcano. Since the ninth century, it has erupted more than twenty times. All of this activity has led to its longstanding nickname, among Icelanders, as Gateway to Hell. In fact, over the last 1,100+ years, it has become one of the world's largest producers of lava.
