Yes they should treat any patient with pain even if it means sending them to a specialist in the field of the condition the patient has, or hospitalizing them. It use to be the 'Hippocratic Oath' but has since changed to 'The Code of Ethics' because doctors felt the old Oath was not modern enough to meet their concerns. Some forms of cancer unfortunately still cause pain no matter how much pain medication the doctor may give them. Morphine can only be given in small doses without killing the patient or other drugs in the same family. Since Marijuana is illegal in most States for even medicinal purposes, it is not illegal in Canada. Often time Marijuana can be a lifesaver for patients in extreme pain or nausea due to treatments for their condition. Doctors however, are not liable for treating patients who come in for drugs (plenty of them because I worked in doctor's offices) to compensate for the lack of street drugs. The doctor should recommend treatment to come off the drug, but that is all the doctor is required to do. If the patient is willing to take the treatment provided then the doctor will work with them.
