A pilot light will only stay on if your themocoupler is working. A thermocoupler is a small rod that the flame touches and heats up generating millivolts of electicity that in turn keeps the gas valve open. Otherwise you've got a flame out, a gas valve open, and when the gas finds another source of ignition...BOOM Elvis has left the building
