If she is a brain injury victim, I'm hoping you will take this into consideration in your future dealings with her. You should extended an offer to help. This is a good example to your children. You could even offer to take her into your home to help in her future care, and any possible recovery.

I know a couple who did this when the man's ex sustained a traumatic injury. Above all else, consider what is best for our fellow human beings.
