There are four major divisions (castes) in Hinduism. Today, they are less adhered to, although traditionally, it meant a lot.

1. Brahmins

The Brahmins are the holy caste of the Hindu society. They represent purity and include priests.

2. Kshathriyas

The kshathrias (shath-ri-aahs) are the warrior caste. They represent valour/courage or brevity and include the kings and warriors.

3. Vaishyas

The Vaishyas are the business caste. They represent prosperity and include merchants and traders. Trade, agriculture and the rearing of cattle is the work of a Vaishya.

4. Shudhras

The Shudhras (shoe-dhraas) are the labourers, representing hardwork. They are often seen as the lower caste of society although they do a lot of work such as cleaning. Shudhras include servants.

I know the Caste System in at least Ancient India. The Caste system is in highest to lowest as written:

Brahmans - highest class; priests and scholars, (because daily life was based on religion and rituals)

Kshatriyas - ruling class; warriors, princes and nobles

Vaisyas - merchants and farmers

Sudras - commoners and laborers

There was a fifth class, considered to be the lowest of the low (this still holds true today)

The Untouchables. They did work no one else wanted to do. Ex. cleaned up after cremating the dead, executed criminals, tanned animal hides, did jobs seen as unclean.

It is sad that the Untouchable class and the prejudiced caste system still exists in modern India today.
