Unless you are a hobbyist or a professional computer programmer, you do not need to do any "programming" for your computer. You are probably wanting to reinstall your operating system. This is not the same thing as programming.

There are Associated Degree (U.S.A.) and Professional Certification available for Computer programming. But you don't need to have one to be a programmer, and have any of those (AA degree or certification) does not mean that you can or should program, either!!Computer Science major is NOT the only way to learn computer programming. There should be courses available for non-computer science majors.
You don't need computer programming for physics. Try it out; you might like it.
Just about any engineering course that's not specialized in computers. You might want to try your hand at computer programming anyway; you'll probably need SOME computer programming.
You can buy and download an ebook version of the book or if your library has an ebook website you can use your library card number to check out an ebook to read on your computer. (to read ebooks, you will probably need a special program like Adobe Digital Editions or something like that)
Computer programming has a longer life expectancy. Once the network is built, there is nothing to do till it breaks, or they need to modify it. If you are looking to networking, you will probably be consulting. If you are looking to programming, you can look forword to sitting in the same place day after day.
A degree is not necessary to be a computer programmer. You really need to know what you're doing though.
