Most people pay for college by first filling out a FAFSA. The FAFSA is a document that the federal government uses to determine what type of financial aid you are eligible for: Federal Student Loans and/or Pell Grants. Federal Student Loans are subsidized up to a certain amount and Pell Grants do not have to be paid back to the government as long as the student stays in good academic standing.
Next, you can apply for scholarships on external websites and also check with your desired college for internal scholarships.
If you want to reduce the cost of school, look into taking CLEP exams for General Education and Elective credit. These tests usually are around $100 including the study material and allow you to test out of certain college classes if the college accepts CLEP.
