The Battle of Saratoga, Burgoyne surrendered October 17, 1777. It showed the French that we might have a chance of wining the war, therefore, we earned their support and financial aid. The battle was lost earlier when 1500 troops went over to Bennington, Vermont to "requisition supplies" They got badly beaten August 17th as did 600 reserve troops sent as reinforcements. Few returned to Saratoga. So a British force that needed to be strengthened was made far weaker setting the British up for the loss at Saratoga.
700 soldiers of the British Army had been ordered to Concord to take possession of a rebel arms depot. The rebels had been tipped off and were waiting for them. What I have found was the Battle of Lexington and Concord at first were forces from Britain and the Colonies facing each other without fighting. There is a POSSIBILITY that the famous "shot fired heard round the world" that began the battle and the war was actually a hunter in the nearby forest which triggered nervous soldiers into battle.

The combined battles were each about a day long, but separated by 18 days. The battle of Saratoga was actually two separate battles, on September 19 and on October 7, 1777. In the Battle of Freeman's Farm (Sept. 19), British General Thomas Burgoyne pushed back the forces under Horatio Gates. However, a similar attempt failed 18 days later at the Battle of Bemis Heights, and Burgoyne's army was surrounded by the American forces at Saratoga. On October 17, he surrendered.

Known as the "Battle of Lost Opportunities." Both sides claimed victory. The battleships (Dreadnaughts) fired volleys at each other, then lost each other, the Germans ran away (retreated back into port), and the British (battleships got lost); neither battleship fleet ever fighting each other again. The primary combatants that did end up fighting were the battlecruisers from both sides.
