Orange was the house whose prince usually became Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic. The word 'stadtholder' literally translates as 'stead-holder' or 'place keeper', and more loosely as 'steward'. The house wasn't just the source of governmental leaders. It still provides the heirs to the throne of the Netherlands.
