On a 1984 rx-7 what could be the problem when it bogs down and looses power at about 45mph or when going up steep hills It feels like it isn't getting any fuel and runs fastest with light throttle.?In: Mazda RX-7 |

Answer
It's very likley that you do have low fuel pressure. It could be the pump or the filter, but it could also be the throttle position sensor or any of a number of other possibilities.
Answer
From here it sounds like a clogged air filter or fouled spark plugs. If a high throttle setting causes black smoke to come out the back (best checked by someone following since the black may dissipate too rapidly for the driver to see) then there is not enough air for the amount of gasoline being fed. Bad spark pulgs can do the same since the compression increases with air intake and the plugs may not be able to fire across the gap at the higher pressure involved. And, of course, anything that makes insufficient fuel availble could also be at fault such as a bad fuel pump or a leaky fuel line. A leaky line is usually obvious if you smell gasoline outside the car right after shutting it down. The line will probably leak until the fuel has drained from the line.
