It isn't painful at all with the epidural. The contractions leading up to it hurt real bad. but once the epidural kicks in, you don't feel a thing. I just had my first baby 8 months ago. The most painful part of the whole thing to me, was after the birth, they have to push on your stomache really hard to make sure the whole placenta came out. you don't feel them stitching you up or anything. But by that time, you will be holding your new beautiful baby and barely even notice.

Pain scale of 1-10, it was a 6 for me (that's with 10 being natural childbirth). Swallowing and talking is a bit weird, but pain is not bad. Doctor discharged me with Lortab 7.5mg, but I only needed 2 for the eve and night. I switched to Tylenol and that worked great without the side effects of Lortab.

My wife (66) has just experienced this problem. On a scale of 0-10 she rated it as 8 or 9. So the simple answer is this can get extremely painful.
Its different from peron to person. Not all hymens are broken from penetration. Things like riding a bicycle can also case the tearing. personally the best thing you can do is relax!!!! My fiance and I had made several attempts our first time and it was extremely painful. I told one of my girlfriends about it and she suggested that being on your back with your knees bent was a better position. It worked. Significantly less painful.
