It is said that construction of the wall began early in the morning, on 13th August 1961, and took just 24 hours to complete.
The original 'wall' was actually a barbed-wire topped fence. Over the next 14 years more fortified additions were made until the final larger and stronger concrete wall was constructed in 1975. This was the wall that stood until the opening of the checkpoints in 1989.
