Is it only on the left side? Does it seem to travel to your back as well? Do you drink excessive amounts of alcohol? If you answered no, yes, and yes, it could be pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, and you should seek medical treatment immediately. The only cure is to discontinue ingestion of anything until the swelling and irritation subsides. But in order to receive vital fluids, you will need to be treated intravaneously (IV) with liquids, vitamins and medications, and the best place for that is the hospital. Length of hospital stay varies with severity of problem, age, overall physical condition, etc. Pancreatitis is extremely painful and eating or drinking anything at all only irritates the organ. It is important to stay hydrated, however, and this explains the need for the IV. Pain medication is administered as the pancreas become less irritated over time, but time is really the only cure. Pain on the left side under the rib can also be signs of a swelling spleen, which requires medical attention.

∙ 13y agoCould just be muscular. Also, your sleen is located just under the left side of your ribcage. Sometimes spleen pain is an indicator of impared liver function, so if the pain doesn't go within a couple of days, best to go see a doctor.
