The most common pain medication for dogs is buffered aspirin, made for dogs, so it is chewable and is measured by their body weight. Such as Tablets of 600 mgs. that can be broken in quarters, a whole tablet for a dog that weighs 60 pounds usually. I recommend the buffered only, because your dog can't tell you when his stomach is bothering him, so you have no warning if the aspirin is doing any damage. There are some side effects with pro-longed use, and you should see your Vet if you need to use it on an on going bases, but as a anti-flamitory, and/or fever reducer for short term, use the Buffered Aspirin for Dogs. Make sure you weigh your dog before giving them the medication so, you give the proper amount. Also, check the bottle to see if it is a time release formula, many brands you need only give twice a day. If it appears that your dog needs stronger medication you need to check with your vet, there are other meds. they can give for more intense pain, and they are very effective. But you will need to have your dog checked in order to determine the level of medication needed. Finally, if after giving the buffered aspirin, your dog has diarrhea or vomiting, stop giving them the buffered aspirin and call your vet, and make sure you have the name of the medication with you. *** Do Not Use this Medication For Cats!***

What do you give your dog for a toothache?

At home, nothing - dogs do not react to medications like humans do, and there are no safe human pain medications for dogs to have. You should make an appointment with your veterinarian to have your dog's teeth examined and the veterinarian will determine how to relieve your dog's pain.

Your dog was spayed today What can you give her for pain?

You should talk to the veterinarian who spayed your dog about pain medications for her. You can't give your dog human pain medications (Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, aspirin, etc) because these are very toxic to dogs and could kill her.

Are pain medications considered antibiotics?

No. Pain medications do not have any antibiotic properties. Antibiotics fight bacterial infections, Pain medications work on nerve pathways.

What can you give your dog to relieve muscle pain?

There are no safe medications for dog pain available over the counter. You will have to go to the vet and get a prescription because human OTC drugs are harmful to dogs.

What can you give your 91 pound Doberman to relieve his hip pain?

There are no medications you can get from home that would be safe - Advil, Tylenol and aspirin are toxic to dogs and could kill your Doberman. You can talk to your veterinarian about prescription medications for mild pain, but for a 91 pound dog this may get expensive.

Can dogs have over the counter pain pills for arthritis?

No, you need to get a prescription for pain medication from your veterinarian. Dogs are very sensitive to the side effects of OTC pain medications designed for humans (such as Tylenol, Aleve, Advil, aspirin, etc.) and even one pill can be enough to cause a fatal stomach ulcer.

Can a 57 lb Pit Bull female 11 yrs be given Excedrine for menstrual pain?

NO - you should NEVER give your dog medications that are meant for humans; dogs are not little humans and do not react to medications the same as humans. Over the counter pain medications (Excedrin, Tylenol, Aleve, Advil, etc.) are particularly harmful for dogs - one pill can cause a fatal stomach ulcer. In addition, dogs really don't get menstrual pain - they don't have menstrual cycles like humans where the lining of the uterus increases then is shed. If your dog appears to be having menstrual pain, you should take her to your veterinarian immediately - I would worry about uterine, ovarian or mammary cancer.

Can dogs take Tylenol for cold weather joint pain?

No; dogs are not small humans and do not react to human medications well. Over the counter pain medications for humans, like Tylenol, are actually toxic to dogs and can kill them even in small doses. If you suspect that your dog has arthritis (joint pain), you should take your dog to your veterinarian and he/she can prescribe a pain medication that is safe for your dog to take. You can also make it easier for your older dog to handle cold weather by providing warm blankets for him/her to lay on or providing heat to his/her resting place through the cold weather. Remember that dogs with long hair coats (German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, etc.) will tolerate the cold much better than humans while short-coated breeds (like Chihuahuas, Boston Terriers and Boxers) will be more like humans in their reaction to cold weather.

What dosage of childrens liquid Tylenol for a 10 pound dog?

Nothing - dogs are very sensitive to the side effects of Tylenol and you could kill your dog with it. The same is true for adult Tylenol in a pill form, aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, and all other human over-the-counter pain medications. If you think your dog would benefit from pain medication, you should talk to your veterinarian. There are safe daily pain medications for dogs, but you have to get a veterinary prescription to get them.

What is good to give a dog for menstrual pain?

Nothing - human pain medications are not safe for dogs. Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, aspirin, acetominophen, ibuprofen and other such drugs are extremely toxic to dogs. Also, dogs don't have menstrual cycles and generally don't experience any pain or discomfort when they come into heat. They may bark or howl, but this is generally believed to be a method to notify males in the area that they are fertile and receptive, not an indication of pain.

Can pregnant dogs take Tylenol?

No; dogs are not small humans and do not react to human medications well. Human pain medications like Tylenol are actually toxic to dogs and can kill them even in small doses; this would be an even greater concern in a pregnant dog because the hormone fluctuations could make the dog more sensitive to the toxic effects.

What is a good over the counter medicine for dogs that can relieve arthritis pain?

Sorry but there are no over the counter treatments for arthritis in dogs. You shouldn't be seeking one anyway and for the sake of your dog's health, you should only go for veterinarian certified health supplements and/or medicines. And yes, you can find these vet approved treatments from online stores as well.
