"A meteroid that hits earth's atmosphere becomes a meteor. When it comes to rest on the earth's surface it is then known as a meteorite."
Actually, the portion of a meteor that hits the surface of the earth is called a meteorite. A meteor is the steak of light we see acrss the sky, which can be part of a comet, a meteoroid, an asteroid, or any other interplanetary debris we may see from earth. However, a meteor is the larger part that can be seen, but not the actual portion that hits the earth. (Source: Astonomy Today, 6th edition by Chassion & McMillan)
The parts of a meteoroid which reach the earth's surface are called meteorites.

A space rock is classified as a meteoroid when it enters Earth's atmosphere and has not yet ignited. It is classified as a meteorite when it hits Earth's surface.
It is a meteorite
No. The mass is constant. Until it hits.
The lower the Sun is on the horizon, the longer the shadow that is cast, the higher the Sun is in the sky, the shorter the shadow.
As a rock is falling through the atmosphere, it is a meteor. When it hits the earths surface, it is a meteoroid.

"Meteoroid". If it actually hits the Earth's atmosphere, the streak of light will be a "meteor", and if the object survives to impact the Earth's surface then we call the remains a "meteorite".
