Colloquialisms are words of the common parlance that developed from the more "proper" forms.
Also there are what's known as "idioms"- fixed phrases with a narrow specific meaning (ie. "Too many cooks spoil the broth")

It's basically just slang. Each country has it's own sorts of slang.
