In 1697, Peter the Great went on a journey with his "Great Embassy," this was a very long trip to Western Europe. He saw that many European nations were strong, so he traveled to Western Europe to figure out how the Russians could be more like Western Europeans. While he was there, leaders discovered he was there, so he quickly left. Before leaving, he convinced over 750 Europeans to return to Russian with him. They were highly skilled and educated Europeans who were willing to train Russians to become doctors, soldiers, and artisans. His goal was to Westernize Russia, he made changes in the government, Russian culture (forced nobility to dress like Westerners and to cut their beards), made changes in the Russian Orthodox church, moved the capital to St. Petersburg and raised taxes to pay for reconstructing the military.
