A plant has to be in a climate that suits it. Most of the chemical reactions that make life possible happen best between freezing (0 Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit) and somewhere under boiling.

To quote another source :

Most plants grow slowly at low temperatures, 32-50°F (0-10°C), and some tropical plants are damaged or even killed at low but above-freezing temperatures.

In a growing daffodil, neither hot nor cold water are good for the plant.

  • Cold water: can damage the plant roots and slow the metabolic processes. Plants grew slower and were shorter.
  • Hot water: My physically damage the plant, especially the roots.
  • Warm water: No apparant damage to plant tissues. Absorption of water into the roots occurs faster. Temp should be 68-70F.

If you are referring to a cut flower in a vase of water, putting the bouquet in the refrigerator will refresh the stems and flowers. The cold wate will stop the metabolism of the tissue and they will stay fresher for a longer period of time.

Would sandy soil help grow daffodils better?

Soil that retains water and gives daffodils "wet feet" will cause bulb rot and the plants/bulbs will die. Sandy soil is well drained and slightly acidic and that is a favorite of daffodils. Sandy soil will also make for slightly taller daffodils, which are preferred if you like cut flowers.
