1. The fossil record and the fossil sequence. The sequence is very clear among the great taxa, from fossil fish to fossil amphibians, then reptiles, then birds and mammals.
2. Genetic comparison of A, T, C and G sequences. The number of nucleotide changes in a shared sequence between organisms can be used to infer the time it has taken since the divergence between those organisms.
3. Chromosomal rearrangement and chromosomal fusion discoveries. There is a chromosomal fusion between chimpanzee chromosomes explaining why chimpanzees have 24 pairs of chromosomes and humans have 23.
4. Comparison of anatomy and vestigial anatomy. Whales and pythons have limb bones where their are no limbs. Skinks calledScelotes are losing their limbs at present, dragging their now hopeless hindlimbs behind them.
