Frequently called the "I Have a Dream" speech, this is the most famous speech by Dr. King, given standing on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial (plaque there marks the spot, by the way) In his speech, he called for equal treatment of all people. At that time, black people were badly treated in the US. The entire speech can be read at the link below. It will only take you a minute to read it. It explains a lot.

Martin Luther King gave the speech "I have a dream" to show all of the thousands of black people who were being racially abused and discriminated that there was hope.

Throughout his life, all he knew was a separation between blacks and whites. During college he decided it wasn't good enough, it wasn't right.

He gave this speech to show blacks that he had a dream, that the racial abuse and discrimination would be gone, and everyone could be equal. He believed that blacks and whites were equal and that there was a way of protesting civil rights without using violent measures. Throughout his speech he says:

  • you can fight and protest without violence
  • blacks and whites are equal
  • the only difference is the colour of your skin.
