If two atoms have equal electronegativities, they tend to share electrons equally in non-polar covalent bonds. However, if electronegativities differ, then the atoms tend to form either polar covalent bonds or ionic bonds.

Take water as an example. H2O

Oxygen is much more electronegative than hydrogen ( 3.44 to 2.2 ) so the electrons of the two hydrogens in water spend more time in the orbital of oxygen then in the orbitals of the hydrogens; closer, if you will. So, this gives the oxygen end of the molecule a sightly negative charge ( two more electrons, which are negative, spending more time in oxygen's orbital range ) and the hydrogen end ( which is almost " giving " the electrons to oxygen and divested of electrons ) becomes more positive. This is the " poles " in polar. One slightly negative and one slightly positive, but the whole molecule is considered neutral.

Explain how electronegativityaffects the polarity of a bond?

the polarity of a bond is defined by the unequal sharing of the electrons between 2 molecules. so if there is a larger difference of electronegativity between 2 molecules, it will be more polar

What contributes to the polarity of a water molecule?

This is the difference of electronegativity between oxygen and hydrogen.

The greater the electronegativity difference between two bonded atoms the greater the percentage of?

The greater the electronegativity difference between the two bonded atoms, greater is the ionic character of the bond.

What is the concept of polarity due to?

Differences of polarity between different compounds (molecules) have two causes: - differences of asymmetry between these molecules - differences between the electronegativity of the atoms contained in the molecule

What is starches polarity?

Starch is non-polar. Things that are non-polar are bonds between 2 nonmetal atoms that have the same electronegativity.

What is the relationship between bonds and electronegativity?

If the electronegativity difference between the two atoms is above 1.7, then ionic bond is formed and if the difference is below 1.7, then covalent bond is formed.

What causes polarity between two atoms?

Polarity between two atoms is caused by a significant difference in electronegativity. This means that one atom can attract the electron in a covalent bond more than the other such that it becomes slighlt neagtive and the other slightly positive.

How can you determine the polarity of any bond?

The polarity of a molecule is quantified by its dipole moment. Calculating the dipole moment of a molecule (except if it is zero or completely non-polar) is not a simple task however, and it is generally determined experimentally.See the Related Questions to the left for how to determine the polarity of a molecule.

Why like atoms form non-polar bond instead of polar bond?

The difference in electronegativity between th atoms foming the covalent bond leads to the polar nture of the bond. If the atoms are alike then there is NO difference in electronegativity- so - no bond polarity
