During the Viet War a liaison officer might be assigned to any grunt, tank, or artillery unit. The liaison officer could be an Air Force, Naval, Marine, Artillery officer (or sometimes NCO). Normally it was an artillery officer...he would be on call anytime and anywhere his host unit directed. His radio frequencies would always be on call to his host commander and delegated subordinates. In short...he worked for his new temporary unit and represented his branch of service (air or guns).

Example: If a grunt (infantry) commander stated, "...I need to blanket that hilltop with fire, what ya got FO (Forward Observer-the liaison artillery officer/NCO assigned to him)?" Artillery officer/NCO, "Sir I've got a battery of 155s with smoke and HE standing by...or if you want larger stuff I've a 175mm at Blackhawk..." Cdr, "I'll take the 155s how many can you throw at it?" FO, "as many as you want sir."
