Your self-introduction in an interview is an extremely important part of the entire time, especially if the job will be in management or sales.

You typically have about 20 or 30 seconds to introduce yourself. We call this 'the elevator speech'.

Eye contact is very important. You should engage, make eye contact, but not stare down or threaten the other person. The handshake is important, somewhat firm but not crushing. Posture is important. Remaining somewhat close, leaning slightly forward if distances permit, head up, shoulders balanced.

You should clearly say your name, what you do, what you would like to do, something that shows you know something about the business, and how you think you can help the person on the other side of the desk.

'My name is John Jones and I am an experienced problem solver for marketing departments. I know that you have an opening here in your West Coast Marketing Group, and I understand that you are concerned that your California advertising campaign is not producing as you expected. I have worked on several successful advertising campaigns and have had some great results in improving positioning. I know that I could step into this role and show you some progress from day one. Could I tell you more about what I have done?'

The elevator speech needs to be practiced and ready. You should be able to modify for circumstances. It should elicit interest in your portfolio, recommendations, CV or resume. It should not conflict with anything in your cover letter, application, or resume. It should not sound 'canned'; you have to be alive.

Some people suggest a point of humor or something more personal. Others suggest really emphasizing past success or business knowledge. You have to adapt the speech to your industry ... you can't make the same speech when interviewing for a counter job at Starbucks as you would be regional marketing manager for Ford.

A self introduction sentence for a resume is a great way of giving a little snippet of information about your personality, at the beginning of your resume. You could say something like, "I am a self-motivated and creative person with a keen eye for detail, I have excellent communication and problem-solving skills and I am eager to confront a challenge".

The usual interviewer open-ended question, "So.. tell me a little about yourself..." can send people into a mental-emotional tailspin. On the spot, what do you say that doesn't sound pathetic or egotistical? It's a little like speed-dating, except your "date" (the interviewer) isn't on the hot seat.

Here are some tips about how to answer and what to say or not say:

  1. Think about it ahead of time! In your mind, list 5 things in answer to "I am...." Now, think of 5 things that brought you to THIS employer for THIS job. Look for things that connect to each other.
  2. Think about your education, skills, interests, goals, and how you think you might fit into THIS job.
  3. Drop out the negatives! Unless you can make a negative become a believable positive, no use shooting yourself in the foot. Do NOT speak badly about yourself! If you do have a bad thing in your past and you think it might come up, have a really positive twist on the story!
  4. Practice at home putting those pieces together. "I am....." Tell yourself just who you "are" and WHY you are going to interview for THIS job.
  5. Practice, practice, practice! The more you hear yourself speaking it, the easier it will be to SAY it to someone when you are nervous.
  6. Remember, in this speech, it is NOT just about YOU, but how you can fit into a company! Think about that; it's important!

So, a SHORT introductory 'speech' might be:

One:

After high school, I got married but found myself in an abusive relationship. When I got up the courage to leave, I had to apply for Welfare to take care of myself and my 10-month old son. But I wasn't happy living hand to mouth and wanted my son to value education and working. So I entered college and got my degree in .... Though it was hard at times, I graduated with a 3.4 GPA. (Here, start turning the story toward the company.... WHY do you fit here?) (And you can add something about your personal interests too.)

Two:

In high school, I didn't pay much attention in classes; I was apathetic and misguided. That really hurt me after I graduated and found I was only qualified for low-paying menial jobs. I worked as a night janitor for 3 years and never missed a day of work despite carrying full credit hours at a local college. In my 4th year, I took a job on campus in the financial aid office. Working there helped me solidify my goals to work with a non-profit agency in the educational sector. I interned at the Red Cross, working with their fund-raising team, learning real world business practices. Mr. X, my immediate supervisor there, thought I would be a ideal candidate to work with your agency, especially in your planned renovation of your school fund-raising goals. The work you do here, at ABB Humanitarian Agency, would fit well into my current learning about the non-profit sector and offer me opportunities to use my financial accounting skills. I'm looking for full time, permanent employment, and would love to help design a long-term fund-raising project for your agency.

ALWAYS in interviews, the Interviewer will ask questions. So no matter what intro you give, you can always give more details later. Just be honest. If you can't sidestep a past problem, admit where you failed BUT always TRY to give things a positive "spin". (I did this not-so-wonderful thing, which wasn't very smart. But from that I learned....) Don't tell your entire life story or all the ways life has treated you badly... but, be real.

"Hello, my name is Blobbert and I am here to be interviewed." If the interviewer wishes to know more about you, he or she will ask. Your job in an interview is basically to answer questions. So you don't have to prepare a speech.
