Whether or not you are responsible can't be determined by yourself, that's an incredibly biased opinion. Personally, I think that if you're buying the iPhone yourself, you'll value it much more, and in that case you're less likely to be careless with it. If your mother has agreed to pay the bill, then I see a perfect set-up. Especially if the iPhone isn't the first you've had.
