Should a computer be shut down when not in use?

Shutting Down a Computer

  • Whether or not your computer should be shut down really depends on you, and what you use your computer for. Obviously in order to run a 24/7 web server or something along those lines, we would need to have a computer hosting 24/7, or have multiple computers rotating the task. Either way, it is perfectly acceptable to turn off your home PC when you are not using it, because it -is- a waste of energy, and does wear down the components in your machine.

  • Well it depends upon the nature of time if youhave no work on the P.C for some good 1 half and hour then u can shutdown it otherwise use the screen saver option because the screen saver option is created for maintaining good health of ur monitor if ur moinitor is on for a long time and is in idle mode then silicon particles on which the electrons are being fired with the help of fire gun becomes weaken. so do use screen saver option if u goo away from ur P.C for 4 or 5 minutes

  • You can use the stand by key if you want to use of ypur PC in the near time of futher. This mode don`t shut down your machine and just get your PC in the sleep mode. But it is better you shut down your machine when it isn`t in use thats help to upgrade your PC life time.

  • If you leave your computer on, make sure it's protected while you aren't around. Our modem was killed by lightening and because it was an older version, we wasn't able to get a replacement.

  • Hibernate will take you back to were you were at very fast.

  • Leaving your computer on will reduce the amount of thermal stress that the components experience from heating and cooling, but increases the amount of dust that circulates through your computer and accumulates inside. The dust will clog the heat sinks on your processor and graphics chip, and the fans causing a temperature increase. Dust will also accumulate on other components and reduce their ability to dissipate heat. A clean environment is crucial for a computer that is left on 24/7. Blowing out the dust periodically is necessary. Dust accumulation can conduct electricity and cause crashes and damage to electronic components. Turning off your computer helps to reduce the wear to moving parts, and saves lots of electricity. Always turn off your monitor. The high voltage in a monitor is a dust magnet. The screen can burn in an image if it is constantly displayed. The brightness of the CRT dims as it ages from use. The heat from a CRT increases the load on your air conditioner and increases its energy consumption. An LCD monitor has a very thin flourescent tube in it that will dim from constant use. It is not cheap to fix. It's your choice.

And here is more information from another:

Reasons for leaving your computer on:

  • You are downloading files or p2p downloads.
  • Antivirus/spyware scanning or video encoding or conversion.
  • You want to have the present system status for config or SAP (you can use hibernate function here).

Options or alternatives for 24/7 system:

  • Layered firewall and antivirus since u r not using the system it makes sense about system resourceses usage.(layered = two firewalls & antivirus if one fails other can protect u from malicious code)

  • UPS UNINTERUPTED POWER SUPPLY.

  • Scripting software or auto execution software for reconnecting 2 internet after disconnection also to enable av and firewall if they r disabled by hackers.

  • Logging software to check status of u r system from the time you were not available to monitor the system.

Answer

yes and no. If it is the end of the day, and you don't have a server going, shut it down, and you will save lots on your hydro (electricity) bill.

BUT, if you do have a server going, and you expect a client to use it any time, then leave your computer on, but only shut off the monitor. The monitor's power has no effect on the entire system.
