Should you give a Christmas gift to your sons ex-girlfriend?

Mother's Day is a day to honor and recognize a mother -- her bringing a child into the world, and her contributions in that child's life -- and that isn't hinged upon her being married to you. Consider thanking her for being a wonderful mother to your children, for giving you your children, etc. Something centered around the children would be very appropriate if you're divorced. If you can't plan something to do for her with your children, a framed picture of the children could be a thoughtful gift. But focus the sentiment on her as a mother and not on her as your ex-wife.

Personally, I would not. Your son is over her and probably won't be ok with you giving her a gift, or even having any contact with her. This may also make the ex-girl friend feel uncomfortable.

However, If your son and his ex dated for a long time and are still friends, or you personally knew her before they started dating, you may be very close to her. In this case, I would say it is ok to give her a small gift. If you do this, make sure she knows that the gift is from you, and not your son. That would send the wrong message.

Being a rhetorical question, the asker would be seeking support for her position, that being to tell her boyfriend that he would be wrong to give a gift to his ex-wife. Not knowing the story behind how they became separated, and their current relationship, there can be only one answer:

For the sake of getting along with one another, holding the children's best interests in mind, you should absolutely work with your children on some form of gift for Mothers Day.

It will show the kids that regardless of their parents ill-stricken relationship, that you guys will still do non-intimate things as a family, and this is what makes a good parent.
