A person with shingles needs to take precautions around a pregnant woman without evidence of immunity to chicken pox. The pregnant woman should discuss the matter with her health care provider, who may have checked immunity at the preconception visit or a prenatal visit.

Because typical shingles is communicable only by direct contact with lesions, even health care workers with typical shingles (not severe) are allowed to work as long as the sores can be covered.

Hopefully nothing but Shingles is caused by the herpes varicella-zoster virus which also causes chickenpox.

If you are pregnant and have not had chickenpox, you should avoid contact with someone who has shingles. If you are pregnant and get shingles, your risk of getting pneumonia is increased. There is also a slight risk that if your unborn child is exposed to the herpes varicella-zoster virus, your baby may be damaged or miscarried. However, this is less likely with shingles than chickenpox.

A history of chickenpox normally provides lifelong immunity. Shingles can only cause chickenpox in someone who is not immune, and has direct skin-to-skin contact with wet shingles blisters or sores. Contact your health care provider for information specific to your situation.

You can only get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you haven't had chickenpox or the vaccine before, and if you have contact with wet shingles blisters or sores. You can't get shingles from someone with shingles.
