In large amounts it can act as an abortifacient, so it's probably best to avoid it if you're worried about it. See: http://www.drugs.com/npc/pineapple.html. Here's the citation: Pineapple Use in Pregnancy/Nursing Avoid use because research reveals little or no information on the use of moderate quantities of pineapple during pregnancy or breast-feeding. Historically, pineapple has been used to regulate menstruation and as an abortifacient. Large amounts of juice have been reported to cause uterine contractions.

Well, if not, many generations of Costa Ricans and 4 or 5 generations of people here in Hawaii would have had serious problems. In general, you can eat almost anything while pregnant that you eat when not pregnant. You might want to avoid some foods with increased risks of diseases (like shellfish or some imported, non-pasteurized soft cheeses for instance) and some people avoid wild-caught fish due to increased Mercury and other metallic contamination. But, for the most part, you should be fine eating things that are fully cooked and generally would be healthy to you under normal circumstances. We have three children and, in general, the doctors said to eat what you like and keep in mind some things that you usually eat will make you sick now. Common sense should prevail. The only thing we were told was to go easy on eating sushi. Not "don't eat sushi" but "go easy on it". As for pineapples in specific - they are pretty acidic and could cause heartburn (overeating them can give you the runs) so if you can get "low acid" pinaepples those could be better. Usually they are sold as whole, fresh pineapples. They are really tasty and the lower acid is obvious when you eat them. I remember buying those in farmer's markets on the mainland. ANSWER: I just read on a website that pregnant women should avoid pineapples- and papaya's strangely. But as to why, I'm not sure. I honestly can't see why you shouldn't.

Yes. It can be dangerous in very large amounts but most people would not eat or drink this much. If you are snacking or have a craving go ahead as it's a great source of vitamin C.

Why should you never hold a pineapple too long?

The reason why you should never hold a pineapple too long is because, pineapples contain very unique enzymes called BROMELAIN. These enzymes are pretty harmful because if you hold a pineapple too long, the pineapple enzymes will start to consume your skin. After a while you will have no finger prints because those enzymes would have eaten them away. Unless you want smooth fingers.
