start with a bass guitar then when you get good at it then switch over to electric guitar.

They're both very different instruments! A knowledge of both instruments will help you learn the other, because they use many of the same prinicples. But id never think of learning one just to edge yourself into the other.

Its also worth mentioning that theres a big leap in between what most people think as a good bassist, and a really good bassist (like flea from red hot chilli peppers).
