Many people do Water Aerobics for Arthritis pain. It helps maintain and build your muscles as well as increasing flexibility so that movement is easier. Most cities have gyms that have indoor pools heated to at least 80 degrees--check with the Arthritis Foundation for locations and programs. I found that during exercise, I was often pain free for the hour of exercise. Also, many insurance plans will pay for the classes. Yes. Studies have shown that exercise helps people with arthritis in many ways. Exercise reduces joint pain and stiffness and increases flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance. Exercise is often part of a comprehensive arthritis treatment plan. This is what The National Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Information Clearinghouse recommends for how to get started: * Discuss exercise plans with your doctor. * Start with supervision from a physical therapist or qualified athletic trainer. * Apply heat to sore joints (optional; many people with arthritis start their exercise program this way). * Stretch and warm up with range-of-motion exercises. * Start strengthening exercises slowly with small weights (a 1 or 2 pound weight can make a big difference). * Progress slowly. * Use cold packs after exercising (optional; many people with arthritis complete their exercise routine this way). * Add aerobic exercise. * Consider appropriate recreational exercise (after doing range-of-motion, strengthening, and aerobic exercise). Fewer injuries to arthritic joints occur during recreational exercise if it is preceded by range-of-motion, strengthening, and aerobic exercise that gets your body in the best condition possible. * Ease off if joints become painful, inflamed, or red and work with your doctor to find the cause and eliminate it. * Choose the exercise program you enjoy most and make it a habit.

The pain that is the result of Osteoarthritis can be relieved to some extent by strengthening the muscles surrounding the the affected joint. it is however wise to seek some advice from a physician or therapist on the best exercise to take for you particular condition.

Find exercises which do not strain those areas. Aquajogging is a good example; the water supports your body and allows you to do whatever you wish, more easily, also, with your doctors permission; water aerobics.

An interesting note: If you are on Medicare, there is a chance that your Medicare Supplemental Insurance Company will pay for a health club membership under the "Silver Sneakers" program, which includes ALL of the health club's services, including water aerobics if they offer it. They figure it's less expensive to keep you in good shape than to repair you from not being in good shape. Makes $en$e I suppose.

How do you know if your supplemental insurance company offers this? Easy: Go to the SilverSneaker.com website and click your way through to the page where they ask for the name of your State. Use the drop-down list and then see if your Supplemental Insurance Company is listed.

If not, contact your current Supplemental Insurance provider and ask them when they are going to offer the Silver Sneaker program.

No, I am not affiliated with Silver Sneaker in any manner. I learned about this from a friend as I was researching water aerobics for my mother, age 82.

Arthritis symptoms are caused by bone grinding on bone because the cartilage of the joint has worn away, therefore doing exercises will only exacerbate the problem. Instead, only use the knee for necessary activity, and if it begins to pain you, rest it.

In the first place just keep moving as much as possible, if you find that the amount of pain you have to put up with as a result of your activity's I would suggest that you speak with your doctor or physiotherapist for a sensible exercise regime. Many older people especially that do not have the funds required to see doctors or physio therapist on a regular basis can get free advice on this by contacting one of the many organisations that support arthritis sufferers.
