Yes. For the 2012-2013 fall flu season in the Northern Hemisphere, the H1N1/09 vaccine is included in the "regular flu shot". There is only one vaccination required to be protected from three of the flu viruses that probably will be circulating this year, which includes the "Swine Flu".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and other public health organizations, epidemiologists, and physicians are all recommending that everyone who can, should get vaccinated. Regardless of your demographic group, you will be much safer from the swine flu if you do.

This is especially important for those who are in the high risk groups for having complications such as pregnant women, people who care for babies under six months old, people with Asthma and other lung disease, those with Heart disease and other chronic conditions, the immuno-compromised from transplant medications, chemo therapy, blood disorders, or HIV/AIDS, etc. (See the related question below for the complete list of high risk groups.)

The swine flu is an unusual strain of flu, in that its fatality rate among the young and healthy is higher than other types of influenza. People in their prime, without compromised immune systems, have died from the swine flu. However, although it spreads easily and rapidly, the H1N1/09 flu was not as deadly as was originally feared.

What type of virus is the H1N1 classified as?

It is a Type A Influenza virus with RNA genome. Also called Swine Flu, the 2009 Pandemic Flu, 2009 Swine Flu, and A-H1N1/09.

Are all influenza Type A viruses the Swine Flu?

No, the pandemic A-H1N1/09 "swine flu" is just one of many Type A influenza strains. It is also one of many H1N1 flu subtypes. Besides Type A influenzas, there are also influenza Types B and C in humans.

If a pig has Swine Flu are the symptoms the same as a human?

The common form of Swine Flu that pigs get is also H1N1 influenza (the original swine flu strain), but it is not the same as the Pandemic A-H1N1/09 Influenza. When pigs get H1N1, they have similar symptoms to humans with influenza. They cough and sneeze and get weak. This flu spreads quickly through the group of pigs who are usually in over-crowded pens, but the mortality rate among pigs is not as severe as the A-H1N1/09 Pandemic Flu in humans.

What is a novel influenza?

The word novel used in this context means new or unusual. The 2009 pandemic swine flu H1N1/09 was initially dubbed the Novel Influenza by the CDC as a means of identification in communications since it was a brand new and never before seen subtype of influenza unnamed at the time. So if someone refers to novel influenza, they are likely currently talking about H1N1/09 swine flu.

Is the swine flu shot going to be mandatory?

It is not currently mandatory in the US, although it is highly recommended that all who can, should get the vaccine, especially if they are among the groups at high risk for complications from this A-H1N1/09 influenza (see below for list of these groups). There are some countries that have made the vaccination mandatory unless there are medical contraindications for their use.

Is the Swine Flu caused by a virus or a bacteria?

It is caused by a virus called A-H1N1/09 influenza virus (aka swine flu).

What would H1N1 be called if it came back even more advanced?

The influenza viruses are identified by and given names that correspond with the proteins on the capsid of the virus (outside coating of the virus). For example, the two proteins on the H1N1/09 virus are Hemagglutinin and Neuraminidase, therefore the virus is called H1N1.The name of any mutations of the H1N1/09 influenza virus, would follow this same naming convention and it would be called by the name that is descriptive of the particular proteins it has on the capsid after the mutation.See the related question below for more information on the naming of influenza viruses.

Should you go to school if you have H1N1-09 flu?

No!

What is N95 in relation to the H1N1 influenza?

It is a type of face mask/respirator that can be worn in some situations to prevent spread of swine flu A-H1N1/09. See the related question below for more information.

Who is the H1N1 shot vaccine best for?

It is best for everyone who can to get vaccinated whether they get the shot or the nasal mist. There are specific indications for who can not take the nasal mist attenuated live vaccine. Those most at risk for complications or death from the influenza virus should also be vaccinated if they are not among those who should not use a vaccine. If everyone could get the vaccination, we would all be better protected. See the related questions below for who should not get this vaccine and who is at highest risk for the H1N1/09 flu and for information on whether a mist or a shot is better.

If you have had Asian flu in the 1956 pandemic might you have some immunity to Swine Flu?

No, probably not. There is genetic material from Asian Pig Influenza in the A-H1N1/09 "Swine Flu", but it also has components of Avian (bird) Flu, European Pig Influenza and Human Flu. The new strain is very different from prior strains of the H1N1 flu or any other Type A Influenza viruses, so there should be no antibodies effective for A-H1N1/09m
