Should you make an adjustment to preserve family relationships? In: Family, Relationships

One short answer is - it depends... It depends on:
- how important to you is maintaining the harmony with this relative?
- would they be willing to do the same?
- is the adjustment something that also affects other family members?
- honestly, are one or the other of you just being stubborn?
- how serious of an adjustment is it? (ie, putting the cap back on the toothpaste or not leaving your dirty socks on the kitchen counter vs. breaking up with the love of your life or changing your religion)
- would making this adjustment change who you are?
Adjustment or Not?
To maintain a good relationship within a family, you will have to make some adjustments. But here is the crucial point: unless the family member asking you to make an adjustment also furnishes you support, e.g. a home, financial or other nonrepayable help, you should insist on some equal adjustment of the other family member, e.g. brother, sister, who is asking you to change.
