A cat using the litter tray frequently usually indicates that the food it is being fed does not agreeing with it, or, if the cat is urinating often but producing a very small amount of urine at a time, this usually means a urinary tract infection and needs to see a vet, and possibly a change to a diet with more moisture in.
Putting a cat on a diet is only really needed when the cat is overweight. Low quality foods, or foods that are high in cereals, grains, corn and other high carbohydrate ingredients can often result in more frequent and smellier faeces, as cats cannot digest such ingredients effectively. Try changing (over a period of a few days) the cat's food and monitoring litter tray habits. If things do not improve or if you are worried, it is best to seek advice from a vet.
