No. It shouldn't be necessary and it puts strain on the linkage to shift constantly like that - the whole idea of an automatic transmission is to eliminate the need to shift gears. The transmission has a fluid clutch that is designed to allow for maximum slippage at idle speeds so that the engine very nearly freewheels when stopped. You may want to put the transmission in 'N' in hot weather. The torque converter creates heat from the viscous resistance of the fluid. This extra heat can be reduced by going in to 'N', but I wouldn't do it unless it was a very hot day and you have had problems with you car overheating. The elimination of this extra heat could be crucial on a hot day when your car has the greatest load on its cooling system.
Not required. Just leave it in drive.
An automatic transmission modulator is the device that decides when your vehicle should shift. It basically controls and regulates pressure for smooth operation of the automatic transmission.

When climbing a steep incline. The automatic transmission will always try to engage a high gear.

You can't shift gears on an automatic transmission because, as it is called, it's automatic! You don't need to shift, it does it for you. == == Maybe the question should be "Why is my automatic transmission not shifting through gears for me as it should?" Could it be a fairly simlpe fix or am I losing my transmission? Yeah Dopey!
Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid ( also , the fluid type should be stamped on the automatic transmission fluid dipstick )
