We all know George Washington as the Father of our Country. His farewell address was very important, in the sense that he emphasized foreign policy. The Monroe Doctrine basically told Europe to stop all their colonizing shenanigans and to keep to themselves. Thankfully, they pulled out of South America. The similarity between the two could be that in both of these addresses, foreign policy was to not meddle in affairs overseas.
Truman announced this broad principle when he requested economic aid for Greece and Turkey to resist Communist insurgents. Truman saw economic aid as a way to prevent Communist parties (either homegrown or encouraged from the outside) from taking root in both countries, especially Greece. The Truman Doctrine was an important early step in escalating the cold war.
The Truman Doctrine was much more expansive in application but somewhat similar to the idea in the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine was meant as a warning to European nations to not attempt to bring their wars and machinations across the Atlantic. Meanwhile with the Truman Doctrine the warning had become more 'portable'. The U.S. would help any nation, anywhere against threats to their way of life from any outside party (i.e. the USSR)

IMPROVED ANSWER:
The Monroe Doctrine called for three basic principles:
1. Monroe stated that North and South America were no longer open to colonization by European powers.
Since there was no room for new colonies in South America, this statement was not directed at Spain, but at Great Britain and Russia. It was a warning to the British not to undertake a settlement in the Oregon country of the Northwest, and a warning to Russians not to expand beyond Alaska.
2. No Transfer meant that the United States would not tolerate the transfer of the New World colonies from one European power to another. An example would be when Spain transferred its ownership of Louisiana to the French).
3. Nonintervention was Monroe's promise that, the United States would stay out of the affairs of Europe. Also, the United States would regard European intervention in the new world as, "an unfriendly act."
Truman proposed a diplomatic "umbrella," over free peoples-not unlike the Monroe Doctrine's "umbrella" over Latin Americans. Truman announced that the United States would resist both outside pressures, and revolution by armed minorities.
Newspapers called this policy the Truman Doctrine. It amounted to a pledge by America to resist communism around the globe.
A similarity of the Monroe Doctrine and the Truman Doctrine would be, to keep the United States a strong and well protected nation.
Westward expansion was an integral part of Manifest Destiny. The USA was to expand from coast to coast. The Pacific Ocean could not be reached without expanding west from the Atlantic Ocean.
