How did Isaac Newton help us?

Newton did invent calculus, which is an important part of the language of todays modern physics together with group theory and topology. An ancient controversy of the history of science is whether he should share his invention of calculus with the German philosopher Leibniz. Recent historical reseach suggests they invented it independently of each other, but Newton was a couple decades earlier. However, he did not publish his results until long after his dicoveries, him being very secretive and knowing the power of his new mathematical tools, he wanted to keep it to himself, until he knew Leibniz had developed similar ideas. This lead to the bitter controversy between the two of who was the original inventor of calculus.
