Stalagmites, which are found in caves, are cone-shaped formations of calcium deposits made by calcium concentrated water dripping through the cave ceiling and onto the floor of the cave. Once the water evaporates, solid calcium is left behind thus forming a stalagmite. These deposits form like an icicle hanging from the cave roof.

However not to be confused with a stalactite (which is a cone-shaped calcium deposit hanging from the ceiling of a cave), stalagmites are cone-shaped icicle formations of calcium deposits that build upward from the cave floor.

What are stalactites and stalagmites and why are they produced?

Stalactites and stalagmites are corresponding rock formations , stalactites being the ones on the roof of the cave and stalagmites the ones on the cave floor. Why are they formed? They are formed because water leaking into the caves craves out the rocks slowly into stalagmites and stalactites.

What is the formation of stalagmites?

Why are stalagmites and stalactites sedimentary rocks?

stalactites and stalagmites are sedimentary rock becausethey are made from sediment that as formed together. just like how igneous rock is formed by lava or magma that has cooled over time.

Are the stalactites and stalagmites considered as living organism?

No. Stalactites and stalagmites are formed from minerals, brought down from the rocks above by water.

How are stalagmites formed?

condensation from the ceiling drops water onto the ground and over the years it drops more and more water and the water dries and the minerals in it build up until it rises out of the ground .... stalagmites are rare as they come from the ground ... normally you find stalactites

Substance of which the stalagmites are formed?

Calcite, usually, from the limestone above the cave. (Or gypsum, if the cave is in that rock)

Where would you find stalagmites stalagmites?

In caves formed in limestone - as are most of the world's caves although not all such caves contain stalagmites and stalactites. They are precipitations of calcite dissolved from the host limestone by carbonic acid - rain water acidified by atmospheric carbon dioxide dissolved in it.
