Urey and Miller provided evidence for the possibility for inorganic substances to produce organic (living) substances.

They simulated hypothetical conditions which would be present in the early Earth.

They showed how gasses of an anoxic environment, combined with static electricity could form simple organic compounds and Amino Acids.

out of 22 amino acids created, 13 where those used to make proteins in living cells.

This experiment has been replicated successfully to provide a similar outcome each time. Mckenzie was here :3

Amino acids, generally. 11 out of the 20 amino acids from certain compounds and element. Methane, water and other compounds. They later surmised that this artificial atmosphere did not really reflect the early earth,s atmosphere, but many experiment since then. with different conditions and compounds have yielded results including amino acids and RNA.

The Miller-Urey experiment simulated the conditions thought to be present at the beginning of Earth, testing for the origin of life. The Miller-Urey experiment specifically tested the Oparin-Haldane Hypothesis for how the earliest organic compounds were synthesized. The Oparin-Haldane Hypothesis said that CH4, NH3, and H2 were present in the atmosphere and H2O was present in the ocean; once electricity was added to provide electrons, fatty acids and amino acids would be produced.

Miller and Urey mixed water vapor with H2, CH4, and NH3, then used an electrode to add in electrons. Once the water containing the organic molecules were cooled, they found a variety of amino acids in the solution after sampling for chemical analysis.

However, there is now some evidence that suggests that there were fewer of the reducing molecules than what Miller and Urey used in their experiment. Also, volcanic eruptions may have released carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. This may have allowed even more molecules to be produced than the ones in the Miller-Urey experiment.
