The sample result is unclear. A number of variables could contribute to mixed results including contaminated equipment, not enough iodine when staining the sample, too much ethanol when rinsing, or not the sample did not heat long enough.
If there are any purple bacteria it is probably Gram-positive, but perhaps the stain did not take well to the others. If this happened to me I would re-stain the sample and try again.

The Larger sample allows for more precise results.
Suppose you took a sample of someone's blood in a tube then noticed a crack in the tube. You would be doubtful of the integrity of the sample because the crack might harbour contaminants that would cast doubt on measurements.

I suppose that the crystalline structure was disturbed during melting and a new test on this sample may offer an erroneous result.
