The fourteenth Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion and presently leader of one branch of Tibetan Buddhism. Specifically "The Way of Virtue" (Gelugpa). This Tantaric school of Buddhism is of the Kadampa tradition amd may generally be viewed as Mahayanic. His position is traditionally the head of state of Tibet although he has been both head of state and head of Tibetan Buddhism while the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama is being sought. He has been in exile since 1959 in India due to harsh tensions with China.

The Dalai Lama between the 17th century and 1959 was in fact the title of the head political figure of the Tibetan government as well as the country's foremost religious figure. The current Dalai Lama is the 14th Dalai Lama in the line. However, each new Dalai Lama is chosen as being seen as a reincarnation (born again) of the previous Dalai Lama. The religion you may be thinking of is Buddhism; the religion practiced by the Dalai Lama and his followers.
