Washington chose not to run again, so this was the first election that began to see the two-party system develop between John Adams (Federalist) and Thomas Jefferson (Republican).

1796 was the first contested presidential election. It was also the first time that a President was going to voluntarily give up his power and a new administration was going to be put into place. It was really the first big test for the new Constitution. Could anybody else but the popular hero Washington make it work ? There were also impending problems lurking with France and Britain.
