So they started by taxing the sugar in the colonies, which they knew was used a lot because of the Triangle Trade.

∙ 9y agoThe Sugar Act of 1764 was passed with the hope of collecting tax revenue on sugar and molasses. The earlier Molasses Act charged a tax of six pence for each gallon of molasses, and was rarely collected. In the Sugar Act, the tax was reduced by half.

∙ 13y agoParliament passed it to lower the molasses tax from 6 pence to 3 pence per gallon. This seemed like a good thing but actually caused more problems in the colonies. The people had been smuggling molasses, paying nothing. Though the price had been lowered, the stricter customs officers actually made them pay it therefor they saw it as a negative thing.
