Garfield died from complications following an ultimately successful assassination attempt. On July 2nd, 1881, He was shot twice by Charles J. Guiteau. One bullet entered his arm, and the second bullet was believed to be near his spine but was not found. Three operations were performed to remove fragments with un-sterilised instruments, doctors probing the wound with their hands. Severe infection developed and on September 19, 1881, Garfield finally succumbed.
