Electoral college.
This phenomenon is not due to any amendment. Amendment 12 changed the procedure for electing the President, but did not actually change the indirect way the President is elected. Popular vote is not mentioned in the Constitution and does not elect directly elect the President and such is the plan in the body of the Constitution.
If it really is the most widely supported plan, it is probably because it is the easiest to understand and explain. Direct popular vote is the simplest possible way to hold an election. Unfortunately, it has many drawbacks which is why it is not used to elect the US president.

The Constitution expressly requires that the President must be a natural born citizen of the United States, 35 years of age.
Republicans won a resounding victory
Francisco Madero was a president in Mexico who was born on October 30, 1873 and was assassinated on February 22, 1913. The Modero Plan was the beginning of the anti re election movement in Mexico.
During the American Civil War, President Lincoln proposed a plan called the 10 percent Reconstruction plan. It was a way for southern states to rejoin the Union. It stated that a state could rejoin if 10 percent of voters (counted in the presidential election of 1860) had taken an oath of allegiance to the U.S. and pledged to abide by emancipation. Then, these states would have to elect a state government. A state legislature could write a new constitution, but it had to abolish slavery forever.
He doesn't. Sadly, both sides will claim there is fraud or that the other side is trying to steal the vote. But there is no evidence to support the assertion that President Obama plans to steal the election. This is a common belief on the part of many Republicans, just as Democrats believed President Bush stole the election or got elected due to fraudulent means.
The original plan was the make the person with second most votes for president the vice president. Trouble started brewing at the third presidential election in 1796 when the two main candidates, Adams and Jefferson espoused different views on federal government and political parties began forming in support of these differing views. Once a two-party system evolved, it was clear that the president and vice president would always be from different parties under the original system so the death of a president would result in the losing candidate becoming president.
