Sometimes it is difficult to tell when the head drops and in some pregnancies the baby might not descend until quite late in labor. Some signs are a feeling of pressure low down, walking seems a bit more awkward than usual, an increase in discharge or urination, and even just visually seeing that your bump has moved downward. Often people will tell you that it has! Bachache is another sign, but this is so common at other stages of pregnancy that you couldn't rely on it. Some women actually feel the baby drop quite suddenly, especially if this happens in labor.
Contractions are difficult to describe. They do start off like period pains, in a wave like pattern starting vaguely and building to a peak and dying away again.There is a sensation of tight squeezing . They increase as the labor goes on. I would be lying if I said that they aren't extremely painful at the end because they are - for most women - and it is better to be prepared to face them. Mostly you get an opportunity to get accustomed to them as the labor goes on and there are many good ways to deal with the pain.
