When Grant seized Vicksburg after a long siege, it closed the Mississippi to Southern traffic. They could not reinforce their army or resupply their troops from the Confederate states West of the Mississippi. In effect, it began the slow, inevitable strangulation of the South as foreseen in the Anaconda Plan.
