The best known was the 442nd Infantry Regiment. Though called a "regiment", it was in fact twice as large as any other US regiment. All other US regiments had three battalions, while the 442nd had six. There was also the 100th Infantry Battalion, made up mostly of Japanese-Americans from Hawaii, which usually operated with the 442nd Infantry. These seven battalions were almost as large as a US infantry division, which had nine infantry battalions.

During WW2, a regiment in the US Army (as well as other countries) consisted of Companies and Battalions. The typical US Infantry Regiment contained 12 companies. They were grouped into 3 battalions, each commanded by a full Colonel. 1st Battalions included Companies A, B, C, D(Heavy weapons) 2nd Battalions included Companies E, F, G, H(Heavy weapons) 3rd Battalions included Companies I, K, L, M(Heavy weapons) Each company totaled about 250 men.
It was created in 1775 as the Continental Marines to provide service with the US Navy as Naval Infantry. When it was created the US Navy did not own a single Ship of the Line but the need was seen to provide a military force to protect that investment when it was created. Two Battalions were authorized for recruitment and an additional four companies were added for the defense of Philadelphia.
