The Capetians were Frankish (from the Gaulish tribe of the Franks) kings. The Franks came from what is now Germany and settled first in Northern France (north of Paris). Ater that they extended their territory southwards, and the Capetians established themselves as the most powerful rulers. When they gave way to the following dynasty, the Carolingians, they already held a very sizeable chunk of what is now France.
